Can an at-home treatment really lift and tone your face? Microcurrent, a low-level electrical current, has been used in professional aesthetics for decades and is now one of the most talked-about tools in at-home skincare.
This handheld technology uses its signature silver spheres to deliver a low electrical current to the skin. The treatment itself has gained recognition for sculpting and toning facial features like the cheeks and chin. With the rise of at-home microcurrent devices, more people than ever have interest in and access to this treatment.
But what exactly does this tool do to the skin, and can it really provide a lifted, toned, more defined appearance? Here’s what the research and a licensed esthetician have to say about how microcurrent works and its overall effectiveness for the skin and facial features.

What is microcurrent therapy?
Microcurrent therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers very low levels of electrical current through the skin. The technology can stimulate the underlying muscles on the face. [1]
“Microcurrent is a gentle, low-level electrical current used to stimulate the facial muscles and support a more lifted, toned, and defined appearance,” says esthetician Trina Miller-Jefferson.
While microcurrent has become a popular addition to skincare routines, the technology itself isn't new. Microcurrent therapy was developed in the 1970s and has been used in professional and therapeutic settings for decades for pain management, wound healing, and tissue repair. [2] More recently, advances in consumer beauty technology have made handheld microcurrent devices available for at-home use.
People are leaning on these tools for aesthetic reasons, like addressing sagging skin. “It can be used across the full face for overall sculpting or more precisely on areas like the jawline, cheeks and brows, while also helping skin look refreshed and revitalized,” says Miller-Jefferson.
How does microcurrent therapy work?
The low-level electrical current delivered by the microcurrent device stimulates muscle contractions in the area.
This is why microcurrent is sometimes described as a “workout for the face.” Rather than physically exercising the facial muscles, the device provides gentle electrical stimulation that activates them. When used across different areas of the face, this can help create a more supple appearance, particularly around areas such as the jawline, cheeks, and eyebrows.
The effects aren't necessarily limited to facial contour, either. Research on electrical stimulation suggests that these currents may also influence processes within the skin and underlying tissues, including circulation, cellular energy production, and tissue repair. What are the research-backed benefits of microcurrent therapy
“Microcurrent has been used for decades in professional aesthetics, and research supports its ability to improve the appearance of facial tone, firmness, lift, and contour, particularly with consistent use,” says Miller-Jefferson. And yes, this includes the neck.
While the research on microcurrent and at-home facial devices is encouraging, it's still relatively new. Clinical trials suggest that electrical stimulation may help improve certain visible signs of skin aging (including wrinkles and radiance). But because studies have used different devices, treatment schedules, and outcome measures, not every microcurrent device will produce the same results.
One randomized controlled trial studied an at-home neuromuscular electrical stimulation device in more than 100 participants. [3] After 12 weeks of using the device five times per week, participants experienced improvements in facial radiance, skin tone, and the appearance of wrinkles compared with the control group. Researchers also found an increase in facial muscle thickness after several weeks of treatment, while no significant change was observed in the control group.
In another trial, 90 adults were assigned to use one of two microcurrent devices at home for four weeks. At the end of the study, both groups experienced improvements in wrinkles, skin texture, radiance, and skin laxity compared with the control group. [4]
What can you realistically expect from microcurrent?
“I think the key is setting realistic expectations: it’s a non-invasive treatment that can create a beautiful temporary lift, while regular use helps support longer-term visible benefits,” emphasizes Miller-Jefferson. She says there are both immediate and cumulative benefits of treatment.
- For a single treatment, “Many people notice a temporarily more lifted, toned appearance — wonderful before an event — with precision work giving extra attention to the jawline, cheekbones or brows,” she notes.
- For lasting results, Miller-Jefferson says that building consistency is step one. This means using the microcurrent device on the treatment area over several weeks. Then, there’s an ongoing maintenance phase to hold onto that progress. Always follow your device’s recommended schedule.
How can you tell if it’s working? “Take a before photo — gradual improvements in lift, tone, and contour are often easiest to appreciate side-by-side.”

How to fit microcurrent into your skincare routine
Microcurrent works best as one of the first steps in your morning or evening skincare routine.
Miller-Jefferson recommends starting with clean skin and applying the conductive gel or medium recommended for your device. The conductive product helps the current move properly between the device and skin while allowing the device to glide comfortably across the face.
After your microcurrent treatment, you can continue with the rest of your skincare routine, including serums, moisturizer, and SPF during the day.
If you're using multiple beauty technologies, sequencing can matter, too. Miller-Jefferson prefers using warming modalities and LED before microcurrent, followed by microcurrent as the targeted toning and firming step.
Is microcurrent safe, and who’s a good candidate?
Yes, at-home microcurrent is safe and effective when used as directed with the appropriate conductive medium. It should generally be avoided with pacemakers or implanted electronic devices, epilepsy or seizure disorders, during pregnancy, or over broken or actively irritated skin. After injectables or other facial procedures, it’s best to follow your provider’s guidance.
For most healthy adults, microcurrent is considered a low-risk, non-invasive beauty treatment when a device is used according to its instructions. Clinical research on at-home facial devices has generally reported few adverse effects, although temporary redness or mild skin irritation can occur. [5]

What’s the difference between in-office and at-home treatments
In-office microcurrent treatments can be a great option, particularly when you want a more personalized experience from a trained professional. But fitting regular appointments into a busy schedule can make consistency challenging, and consistency is an important part of seeing and maintaining results.
At-home devices offer a convenient way to make microcurrent part of your daily skincare routine. That said, quality can vary significantly between products. Choosing a well-designed, high-quality device is important. A device you can use comfortably and consistently at home may ultimately make it easier to stick with your microcurrent routine and support longer-term results.
